A campaign translator has an integral role of connecting communities across a language barrier and ensuring that New Brunswick residents of all backgrounds can engage with the campaign. Interns will gain real-world experience translating for residents with a diverse range of backgrounds in dynamic settings such as speeches, group meetings, and spontaneous interactions with the public. Interns will put their language skills to the test covering topics such as: politics, quality of life, crime, public health, and environmental issues. Interns will have an opportunity to work with Latinx campaign leaders and volunteers who can provide insights on dialectical distinctions that will be helpful when translating for different audiences.
Start Date: As soon as practicable
End Date: November 8, 2022
Requirements:
- 5 hrs/week average
- Maintain weekly meeting schedule with supervisor
- In-person work in New Brunswick
- Scheduling flexibility to attend both in-person and virtual campaign functions, as needed
- Fluent in both English and Spanish
- Preferred: prior experience doing live translation
- Preferred: familiarity with local dialects of Latin American countries
Responsibilities:
- Provide live Spanish-English translation at campaign events
- Join the candidate and campaign leadership for community outreach and events to assist in translation during one-on-one conversations with residents
- Review and translate written campaign materials into Spanish
